The 'Romano Classico'
The Romano Classico, the first travertine in the MAGNA Atelier, is a unique natural stone that impresses with its geological history and its elegant appearance.
Romano Classico has deep roots in history and geology. It comes from the rich quarries of central Italy, a region known for centuries for its high-quality travertine deposits.
This region, especially the area around Tivoli near Rome, has a long tradition in the mining and processing of this noble stone, which was valued in ancient times for its beauty and versatility.

Origin and Extraction
Tivoli, located in the Italian province of Lazio, has been an important center for travertine mining since Roman times. The geological conditions of this region are ideal for the formation of travertine. Hot springs rich in dissolved lime feed the travertine deposits that have formed over thousands of years.
Water flowing through cracks and fissures in the rock brings dissolved lime to the surface, where it is precipitated by contact with air and the activity of aquatic plants. This process leaves behind the characteristic pores and layers that make travertine so unique.
The impressive colors of Romano Classico travertine usually result from metal ores such as manganese and iron. The layered appearance is created by changes in the outside temperature over the course of the seasons, as the solubility of the ores and lime is temperature-dependent.
Interestingly, the characteristic holes and pores in the travertine are also named after the Tivoli region, underlining its close connection to the region of origin.
These “Tivoli holes” are a hallmark of travertine and give it its distinctive texture and aesthetic.
Sustainable mining and processing
Today, Romano Classico travertine is mined using modern, environmentally friendly methods that aim to conserve natural resources and minimize environmental impact.
The quarries in Tivoli rely on sustainable practices that maintain both the quality of the stone and the ecological balance of the region.
The travertine is cut from the quarries in large blocks and then further processed in specialized workshops. Both traditional techniques and modern technologies are used to transform the stone into perfect slabs and formats for use in interior and exterior design.
Versatility and aesthetics of the Romano Classicos
The Romano Classico Travertine is notable not only for its geological origins, but also for its aesthetic and practical advantages.
Its warm color palette, ranging from light creams and beiges to earthy browns, makes it a versatile choice for different interior styles.
Furnishing styles and possible applications
Classic style: The subtle elegance of Romano Classico travertine fits perfectly with classic furnishing styles. Its warm tones and natural texture give rooms a timeless beauty.
Modern Style: In modern interiors, travertine offers an interesting contrast to clean lines and minimalist designs. Its natural texture brings warmth and depth to modern spaces.
Rustic Style: The travertine blends seamlessly into rustic or Mediterranean interior styles by creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Its porous structure and natural color variations perfectly complement natural materials such as wood and clay.
Surface treatments of travertine and their suitability
Our travertine collection includes various finishes to suit different applications and preferences:
- Cement-filled: This treatment fills the pores of the stone and ensures a smooth and easy-care surface. It is ideal for high traffic surfaces such as dining room tables or kitchen countertops.
- Resin-filled: Similar to the cement-filled variant, this treatment offers an even more resistant and water-repellent surface without causing the characteristic pores of the travertine to disappear . Resin filled surfaces are ideal for those who love and want to maintain the pores of the travertine.
- Open-pored: This variant preserves the natural porosity of the stone and is ideal for decorative elements and less heavily used surfaces where the authentic character of the Travertine should come into its own. An open-pored surface is often chosen for coffee tables and side tables.
- Open-pored and brushed: This treatment gives the stone a softer feel and emphasizes its natural texture. This surface is particularly suitable for outdoor areas.
The unfilled travertines are also particularly suitable for outdoor use, as they retain their natural beauty and structure while being weather-resistant. In this article, you will learn more about the natural stone type "travertine", including the various surface finishes.
