Stay away - Why you shouldn't clean natural stone with vinegar

Congratulations on your new natural stone table from the MAGNA Atelier. We are proud to be able to offer you a unique piece of the highest quality and incomparable beauty. So that you can enjoy your new table and the million-year-old natural stone slab for a long time, we would like to give you some important care instructions. We would particularly like to point out why you should never use vinegar to clean your natural stone table.
The chemistry of vinegar and its effects on natural stone
Vinegar is a common and popular cleaning agent that consists of acetic acid and water. The acidity of vinegar is between 4% and 7%. This acid is the main problem when cleaning natural stone tables. Natural stones such as marble, quartzite, granite and slate often contain calcium carbonate or other mineral components that are sensitive to acids.
Chemical reaction of vinegar with natural stone:
Calcium carbonate and acid: Many natural stones, especially marble and limestone, are made of calcium carbonate. When acetic acid comes into contact with calcium carbonate, a chemical reaction occurs that breaks down the calcium carbonate. This reaction produces carbon dioxide gas, water and soluble calcium acetate. This causes visible damage to the surface of the stone.
Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) + acetic acid (2CH₃COOH) → calcium acetate (Ca(CH₃COO)₂) + carbon dioxide (CO₂) + water (H₂O)
The effects of cleaning natural stones with vinegar
- Matte stains and etchings: The reaction described above leads to visible erosion of the surface of the stone. This etching often appears as dull spots or areas that are less shiny than the rest of the table surface.
Long-term damage: Repeated use of vinegar can remove the protective layer of the stone and change the pore structure. This can weaken the stone in the long term, making it more susceptible to further damage, cracks and stains.
Discoloration: Vinegar can cause oxidative reactions on certain natural stones, especially those with iron-containing minerals. These reactions can lead to unsightly discoloration and rust stains that are difficult to remove.
Alternatives to cleaning natural stone tables
To preserve the beauty and integrity of your natural stone table, you should use special cleaning products that are suitable for natural stone.
Here are some safe and effective alternatives:
- Neutral cleaners: Use pH-neutral cleaning agents that have been specifically developed for natural stone. These cleaners are mild and will not damage the delicate surface.
- Soapy Water: A mixture of warm water and a small amount of mild soap can also be used for daily cleaning. Make sure to wipe the surface thoroughly with clean water afterwards and rub it dry.
- Microfiber Cloths: These cloths are gentle on surfaces and remove dust and dirt without the use of chemicals. Use them regularly to keep your table clean.
- Special care products: There are various care products such as impregnations and sealants that protect your natural stone table and extend its lifespan. These products form a protective layer that prevents liquids and dirt from penetrating.
How to do it right – tips for regular care
In addition to the proper cleaning method, there are some general care tips to help you keep your natural stone table in top condition:
- Avoid heat: Do not place hot pots or pans directly on the stone. Always use coasters or heat-resistant mats.
- Immediate Stain Removal: Wipe up spills immediately to prevent staining. Particularly acidic liquids such as wine, citrus juice, soy sauce or coffee should be removed immediately.
- Regular care: Clean your table regularly with suitable products and carry out professional care or impregnation if necessary.
Your natural stone table is a valuable and beautiful piece of furniture that will bring years of enjoyment if properly cared for. Avoid using vinegar and other acidic cleaners to prevent damage and discoloration. With the right cleaning products, such as our 3-piece natural stone cleaning kit , and regular care, your table will stay in top condition and retain its natural beauty.
