White marble - Olympus White versus Bianco Carrara

In the world of natural stone, white marble is one of the most noble and timeless materials. In the MAGNA studio in Saxony-Anhalt, we make sustainable and locally produced tables made of real natural stone that are not only functional, but also aesthetic masterpieces.
White marble is particularly popular, valued for its pure elegance and versatility. But white marble is not just white marble. In this article we want to tell you the differences between two popular types of marble: our Olympus White and Bianco Carrara.
Why is marble white?
To understand the differences between Olympus White and Bianco Carrara, it is first important to know why marble is white in the first place. Marble is formed by the metamorphosis of limestone under high pressure and temperature. During this geological process, the existing minerals are rearranged and a dense crystal structure is formed. The main component of marble is calcium carbonate, which is formed by the transformation of limestone.
The white color of marble results from the almost pure calcium carbonate and the absence of impurities. Contaminants such as iron oxides or clay minerals can cause marble to appear a variety of colors, from gray to pink to green. In white marble, such as Olympus White and Bianco Carrara, these impurities are minimal, giving it its characteristic bright white color.
Olympus White: The exclusive all-rounder
Olympus White is a relatively rare and exclusive marble that impresses with its snow-white color and homogeneous texture. This marble is quarried in Greece and its appearance is reminiscent of the peaks of Mount Olympus, which are covered by pure snow. The fine gray veins that run through the marble give it a subtle yet unmistakable elegance.
A key advantage of Olympus White is its resistance to stains and scratches. This feature makes it an excellent choice for stressed surfaces such as dining tables. However, it should be noted that, like all natural stone, this marble also requires regular care to maintain its beauty over the years. Regular waterproofing can help close the pores of the marble and make it more resistant to stains.
Bianco Carrara: The Timeless Classic
Bianco Carrara is probably the most famous and widely used white marble worldwide. Mined in the Apuan Alps near the town of Carrara in Italy, this marble has a long history dating back to ancient times. Artists like Michelangelo used Bianco Carrara for some of their most famous sculptures, including the statue of David.
Compared to Olympus White, Bianco Carrara has a slightly softer white color, often streaked with more or less pronounced gray or bluish veins. These veins can vary greatly, from fine lines to bolder patterns, giving each piece of Carrara marble a unique look.
Bianco Carrara is often a popular choice for builders and designers due to its greater availability. However, this marble is also slightly more sensitive than Olympus White. Its livelier structure makes it slightly more susceptible to stains, especially from acidic substances such as wine or lemon juice. At the same time, of course, small crumbs and hairs are not as noticeable on the slightly grayer Bianco Carrara compared to the very white Olympus White. To preserve the beauty of Bianco Carrara, we at the MAGNA Atelier recommend regular care and avoiding direct contact with aggressive cleaning agents or acids.
Differences and similarities
Both Olympus White and Bianco Carrara are excellent materials for fine tables and other pieces of furniture.
While Olympus White impresses with its white purity, homogeneity and durability, Bianco Carrara impresses with its natural, gray grain and its history.
Both types of marble are sensitive to acids and require regular care to maintain their radiance. But while Olympus White is more resistant to stains and scratches, Bianco Carrara scores with its authentic Italian flair and its versatility in different styles, from classic to modern.
