Dunkler Marmor - Nero Marquina & Grigio Marquina
Nero Marquina & Grigio Marquina – Dark natural stones from the heart of the earth
In the MAGNA Atelier everything revolves around the sustainable processing of high-quality natural stones. Tables made of real marble embody luxury and timelessness - especially when it comes to exclusive varieties such as Nero Marquina and Grigio Marquina. These two types of marble, striking for their deep, dark tones, have a fascinating history closely linked to their mineral composition and origin.
But what makes these two types of marble so special and what are their differences?
Why is dark marble dark? – A question of minerals
Marble is formed by the transformation of limestone under high pressure and temperature inside the Earth, a process called metamorphism. Its characteristic color depends on the impurities contained in the rock. In the case of Nero Marquina and Grigio Marquina, it is primarily graphite and carbon compounds that give these types of marble their dark color.
With Nero Marquina, which is mainly mined in the Marquina region in the Basque Country (Spain), it is the high proportion of carbon that creates the deep black color. The simple contrast created by the fine, white calcite veins makes this marble particularly desirable in modern and minimalist designs.
Grigio Marquina, on the other hand, has a more gray to anthracite-colored surface, which is also caused by the carbon content, but is less intense compared to Nero Marquina. The gray is achieved through a different distribution of minerals, which makes this stone appear less “hard” in contrast and gives it a soft, elegant charm.
Nero Marquina – The Depth of the Night
Nero Marquina is one of the most famous black marbles in the world and represents elegance and luxury. The deep black color, crossed by fine white lines, gives this marble a strong visual impact. It is often used in interior design for floors, walls and of course furniture such as tables. It is particularly popular in combination with modern, clear lines and minimalist design.
In terms of origin, this marble comes from the Spanish region of Marquina in the Basque Country. The mild climate and geological conditions of this region contributed to the formation of this unique marble. The interaction of pressure, temperature and the minerals present in the earth's crust has produced a marble of the deepest black over millions of years.
The characteristic, often fine calcite veins are formed when lime penetrates the rock and crystallizes through geological processes. These veins give the stone its distinctive texture, which makes it so desirable. The grain varies from stone to stone, making each piece unique.
Grigio Marquina – Gentle Elegance
While Nero Marquina is known for his dramatic impact, Grigio Marquina embodies a more subtle elegance. This marble also comes from Spain, but is mainly mined in the northern regions. The gray tone of this marble ranges from lighter, almost silvery shades to deeper anthracite. The grain is often cloud-like, giving the stone a soft, almost calming aesthetic.
Visually, Grigio Marquina differs through its smoother transitions and less pronounced veins. While Nero Marquina plays with strong contrasts between black and white, Grigio Marquina appears more harmonious. This marble fits perfectly with classic and timeless designs, but can also be perfectly combined with modern materials such as glass and metal.
Sensitivity and care – what should you consider?
Despite their visual splendor, both types of marble are relatively delicate and require careful care. Nero Marquina and Grigio Marquina, like all limestones, are sensitive to acid. This means that contact with acidic substances such as vinegar, citrus fruits or wine can cause stains and etching. It is therefore advisable to seal surfaces regularly and wipe up spills immediately.
Scratches can also occur more quickly with these types of marble, as marble is softer compared to other natural stones such as granite. Therefore, you should always be careful not to use sharp or hard objects directly on the surface. However, with proper care and careful handling, the beauty of marble can be preserved for decades.
Unique natural stones with character
Nero Marquina and Grigio Marquina are two types of marble that, despite their similar origins and mineral composition, have very different characters.
While Nero Marquina sets dramatic accents with its deep black color and contrasting veins, Grigio Marquina impresses with its soft, gray elegance. Both marbles are perfect materials for luxurious furniture and give every room a unique atmosphere.
In the MAGNA Atelier we attach particular importance to the sustainable processing of these fine natural stones in order to create unique pieces of furniture that not only impress visually, but also bring a piece of nature into your home.
