How to Remove Scratches from Marble - A Guide
Natural stone tables are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also particularly durable. But even natural stone is not completely immune to scratches.
In this guide you will learn how scratches occur on natural stone tables and how you can effectively remove them.
Causes of scratches on natural stone tables
Sharp objects: Knives and other pointed or sharp objects can damage the delicate stone if they apply force to the natural stone or drag across the stone. Marble and limestone in particular, although robust, are susceptible to scratches when they come into contact with hard materials.
Rough cleaning utensils:The use of rough sponges or scouring agents can also scratch the surface of natural stone tables. These cleaning tools can remove the polish from the stone surface and leave fine scratches.
Abrasive particles: Grains of sand or small stones that land on the table surface can cause scratches due to friction.
Careless Use: Dragging objects on the table surface or placing heavy objects without a base can also cause scratches.
How to remove scratches from natural stones
1. Marble and limestone
Cleaning and preparation: Before you start removing scratches, clean the table thoroughly with a mild, pH-neutral cleaning agent and a soft cloth. Make sure that no residue of dirt or dust remains on the surface.
Polishing: For fine scratches on marble and limestone, polishing is often the best method. Use a special marble polish or a polishing agent suitable for natural stones. Apply the polishing agent with a soft cloth or a polishing pad and work on the affected areas in circular movements. Make sure you distribute the product evenly to achieve the best possible result.
Marble retouching pens: A marble retouching pen can also be helpful for smaller and superficial scratches. These pens contain color pigments that are filled into the scratch and visually compensate for it.
2. Granite
Granite Polish: Similar to marble, a special polish can also be used for granite. Granite polish is available at hardware stores or specialty shops. Apply the polish to a soft cloth and thoroughly rub the affected areas. The polish fills in small scratches and brings the surface to a shine.
Abrasive paste: For deeper scratches on granite, an abrasive paste may be necessary. Mix the abrasive paste according to the manufacturer's instructions and apply with a fine polishing pad. Gently work the paste into the scratch and then polish the surface thoroughly.
3. Quartzite
Quartzite, known for its high hardness and durability, is a popular choice for natural stone tables as it is very durable and rarely scratches. When they occur, they are often caused by contact with abrasive materials or by moving heavy objects without a protective surface.
Cleaning the surface: First, remove dust and dirt from the affected area using a soft cloth and a mild detergent. Then rinse thoroughly with water and allow the surface to dry.
Sanding the scratches: Use fine-grit sandpaper (e.g. 400-grit or finer) to carefully sand the scratches. Sand with gentle pressure and in a circular motion until the scratches are no longer visible. Be careful not to damage the surrounding surface.
Polishing the surface: After sanding, you should polish the surface. To do this, use a polishing paste that is specifically suitable for quartzite. Apply the polishing paste with a soft cloth and polish the surface in circular movements until it shines again.
- Sealing the surface: To prevent future scratches and protect the surface, apply a suitable quartzite waterproofing agent. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and allow the product to dry completely before using the surface again.
4. General Tips
Avoid aggressive cleaning agents: Always avoid using acidic cleaning agents (e.g. vinegar), as these can cause additional damage to the stone.
Regular care: Protect your natural stone table with regular cleaning, impregnation and care. Also use coasters to protect the surface from direct scratches.
Professional help: If there are deep or large scratches, it may make sense to consult a specialist. Specialists can carry out comprehensive repairs and restore the stone to its original finish.
